INCIDENCE AND CAUSE OF ULCERS IN SPAIN

Diabetes is a growing disease that comes from the lives of 422 million people in the world.

Spain is the second country of the world and the first of Europe with more inferior amputations derived from diabetic complications.

It has been calculated that at least 15% of diabetics will die during their life of ulcerations in the pie, it is also estimated that 85% of diabetics will suffer amputaciones before they die of an ulcer.

Mainly the causes are that a diabetic patient suffers from an ulcer:

  • The loss of sensitivity in the feet (neuropatía) before painful stimuli, excessive pressures, temperature changes…,
  • Atrophy and weakening of the lower extremity muscles. This produces deformations of the feet and increases pressure in certain areas of the feet.
  • The decrease in vascular blood flow (vasculopathy) that occurs in patients causes chronic ischemia of the lower limb and scarring of the ulcers.
